Aquapharm Bio-discovery Ltd (founded 2000) took up residence in ECMB during October 2004 and is one of the first UK marine biotechnology companies dedicated to the discovery and commercialisation of novel compounds from the marine microbial biosphere, a relatively untapped renewable source of marine bio - diversity.
The Company utilises its specialist skills to discover, isolate and culture new marine bacteria and fungi. Through targeted screening of its microbial library, Aquapharm identifies novel compounds as candidates for new anti-infectives active against drug resistant infections, such as MRSA, as well as sourcing valuable products for the nutraceutical & functional foods markets, in particular carotenoids & fatty acids.
The company looks to develop newly discovered compounds through licencing and strategic partnering. In addition, Aquapharm also welcomes enquiries to screen its library from third parties who wish locate compounds relevant to their research & industrial needs, for example bio-catalysts.
