Where we are

The European Centre for Marine Biotechnology is located on the desirable west coast of Scotland at the renowned Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory. It forms part of the new £12 million laboratory complex opened by the Princess Royal in April 2004 which encompasses state-of-the-art energy saving features throughout and incorporates natural resources such as glass and cedar wood. The complex was funded by the European Regional Development Fund, SAMS, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, and NERC.

The laboratory lies next to the 13th century Dunstaffnage Castle on a peninsular 3 miles north of Oban, accessible via the village of Dunbeg. Oban is a major West Highland Centre, convenient for mountains, lochs and sea. Our location enables us to offer the opportunity to explore a diverse range of marine environments (ranging from shallow coastal environments to the deep Atlantic waters to the west). It combines a very high standard of living with the convenience of commutable journeys to the central belt, London and further afield.
